the best crime thriller you’ve never seen

one false move

Vincent Georgie: This outstanding crime drama just received The Criterion Collection treatment, and with good reason. It’s a slow-burn, tense and high-quality film. Upon release, Gene Siskel and Roger Ebert named it to the top of their Best Films of 1992 lists, and with good reason. Cynda Williams, in particular, is excellent in the film.

Synopsis: Following a series of drug deals and murders, three criminals — Fantasia, Ray Malcolm and Pluto — travel from Los Angeles to Houston, finally arriving in a small Arkansas town to go into hiding. Two detectives from the LAPD, who are already on the case, contact the town’s sheriff, Dale Dixon, to alert him of the fugitives’ presence in the area. Underestimating Dixon, the criminals have no idea what they are about to face.

Available on iTunes, YouTube and Amazon Prime.

if you want an absorbing drama

graduation

Vincent Georgie: Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu is no stranger to WIFF audiences, having shown numerous films at the Festival. He is a master of human moral dilemmas ensconced in difficult and often corrupt societies. This film is like climbing a mountain: the more you climb, the better and deeper the view becomes. Highly recommended. Cannes winner for Best Director.

Synopsis: After an attack before a college entrance exam jeopardizes his daughter’s future, Romeo Aldea thinks up ways of solving the situation, but none of them follow the principles he taught his daughter.

all hail clement virgo

poor boy’s game

Vincent Georgie: Canada’s Clement Virgo just swept the Canadian Screen Awards last weekend with his latest film, BROTHER (WIFF Prize in Canadian Film 2022 nominee). Virgo enthralled audiences when he visited us at last Fall’s Festival. Discover another of his absorbing, entertaining and memorable films, previously seen at WIFF 2007.

Synopsis: Boxer Donnie, jailed for nine years after causing brain damage to a boy he assaulted, is finally released. Donnie is regretful and wishes to move on, but the community is still tense with racial division. The impaired boy’s black family wants revenge, and Donnie’s white relatives are eager for a fight, so a boxing match with a powerful young black man is scheduled. Amid the conflict, Donnie forms an unlikely friendship with his victim’s father.

Available on Crave and Amazon Prime

DOUBLE FEATURE

high fashion creators

Profoundly talented people, no matter the sector or craft in which they create, are a marvel to watch and to attempt to understand. Their skills are unusual in their quality, mystifying in their ability to make something out of nothing. The first film is a very interesting glimpse into the talents of Ferragamo, while the second film is the definitive YSL dramatization with France’s best young actor, Pierre Niney, in the lead.

salvatore: shoemaker of dreams

Exploring the life of Italian shoemaker Salvatore Ferragamo, who travelled from Naples to California and created stylish footwear for iconic Hollywood stars during the silent film era.
