IF YOU want an uplifting christmas favourite

miracle on 34th street

Vincent Georgie: It’s a classic for a reason, and that’s not just to put it up on a shelf in reverence: it’s meant to be watched and enjoyed. This film epitomizes the magic, faith and love of Christmas.

Synopsis: In this Christmas classic, an old man going by the name of Kris Kringle fills in for an intoxicated Santa in Macy’s annual Thanksgiving Day parade. Kringle proves to be such a hit that he is soon appearing regularly at the chain’s main store in midtown Manhattan. When Kringle surprises customers and employees alike by claiming that he really is Santa Claus, it leads to a court case to determine his mental health and, more importantly, his authenticity.

love actually

Vincent Georgie: Enlivened by an incredibly appealing ensemble cast of excellent actors, this film keeps your emotions and funny bone alive. It’s a festive, joyous, and very moving film about joyous love, profound love and fleeting love. And Emma Thompson? Take a bow.

Among the characters explored are David, the handsome newly elected British prime minister who falls for a young junior staffer, Sarah, a graphic designer whose devotion to her mentally ill brother complicates her love life, and Harry, a married man tempted by his attractive new secretary.

elf

Vincent Georgie: It’s funny, silly and inherently watchable. A good one to put on as you wrap presents or sit around in your new Christmas housecoat.

Synopsis: Buddy was accidentally transported to the North Pole as a toddler and raised to adulthood among Santa’s elves. Unable to shake the feeling that he doesn’t fit in, the adult Buddy travels to New York, in full elf uniform, in search of his real father. As it happens, this is Walter Hobbs, a cynical businessman. After a DNA test proves this, Walter reluctantly attempts to start a relationship with the childlike Buddy with increasingly chaotic results.

DOUBLE FEATURE

other cinematic christmases

There has been much debate if the classic action thriller DIE HARD is a Christmas movie. It definitely is, and it makes for an entertaining ride to watch with the aunts and uncles.

And if you want an acid-tongued black comedy under the tree? Just imagine Denis Leary, Judy Davis, Kevin Spacey and Christine Baranski all in fine sarcastic shape in THE REF.

die hard

New York City policeman John McClane is visiting his estranged wife and two daughters on Christmas Eve. He joins her at a holiday party in the headquarters of the Japanese-owned business she works for. But the festivities are interrupted by a group of terrorists who take over the exclusive high-rise, and everyone in it. Very soon McClane realizes that there’s no one to save the hostages — but him.
