IN THE HEIGHTS

(If you want an upbeat new summer movie)

Vincent Georgie: From the creators of “Hamilton”, this joyous musical is a sincere delight. This film adaptation of the successful stage musical really comes together thanks to strong music and a very appealing cast. This one is ideal for an afternoon with the family.

Synopsis: In Washington Heights, N.Y., the scent of warm coffee hangs in the air just outside of the 181st St. subway stop, where a kaleidoscope of dreams rallies a vibrant and tight-knit community. At the intersection of it all is a likable and magnetic bodega owner who hopes, imagines and sings about a better life.

GLEASON

(If you want an inspiring true story)

Vincent Georgie: A hidden gem from WIFF 2016, I was very engaged by the true story of football star Steve Gleason who is diagnosed with ALS. This, ultimately, is a story of a family that pulls together against bleak realities. The emotional sincerity of this film is incredible. Every smile and tear is well-earned. Filmmaker Clay Tweel has done an outstanding job with this film, just as he did a few weeks ago with a very different achievement I highlighted, his comedic gem FINDERS KEEPERS.

Synopsis: After he is diagnosed with ALS, former professional football player Steve Gleason begins making a video diary for his unborn son, while he, his wife, and their friends and family work to raise money for ALS patients as his disease progresses.

PARIAH

(If you just wish everyone could be themselves)

Vincent Georgie: Dee Rees exceeded expectations with her 2011 film about young black teenager Alike (breathtakingly portrayed by Adepero Oduye) navigating the choppy waters of sexual identity, dating, representation and family dynamics. In a very good dramatic turn, look for “In Living Color” comedienne Kim Wayans in a complicated and angry performance as Alike’s mother.

Synopsis: In a desperate search for sexual expression, a Brooklyn-based teenager assumes paradoxical identities and stands to lose her family and friends while setting herself up for heartbreak.

DOUBLE FEATURE

THE GREAT KATE WINSLET

The miniseries “The Mare of Easttown” is the hottest binge-worthy series at the moment, reminding us (not that we needed it) how strong of an actress that Kate Winslet is. Here are two more of her very best performances in dramas that show the breadth of talents.

LITTLE CHILDREN

Synopsis: Unhappy with their respective marriages, Sarah and Brad socialise and soon sparks fly. While the two struggle to legitimise their bond, their community faces trouble when sex convict Ronnie returns.
