Vincent Georgie: This dark, sordid family crime saga about desperate people is brought to energetic life thanks to an expectedly excellent lead performances from Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke, with a who’s who of character actor talent in supporting roles, including Albert Finney, Michael Shannon and Amy Ryan. It’s hard to root for anyone in this film, but fascinating they are indeed.
Synopsis: Andy and his brother Hank decide to rob their parents’ jewellery store. Things take a turn for the worse when their father decides to hunt down the criminals, not knowing that they are his own sons.
Vincent Georgie: This is a favourite from our year-round WIFF 365 screenings. A very touching, inspiring true story that will make you want to discover all the more about its central heroine. I would recommend this one to anyone.
Synopsis: Dr. Anne Innis Dagg retraces her 1956 journey to South Africa to study giraffes in the wild.
Vincent Georgie: If you enjoy your dramas challenging, profound and with no easy answers, this under-seen drama will suit you well. Kelvin Harrison Jr is a discovery as the titular character, with a reliably watchable Octavia Spencer in support.
Synopsis: Luce, a promising student, who was adopted by a couple is tormented by a disgruntled teacher. However, he tries to clear his name and protect his image and reputation.
Michael Douglas may be best known for his iconic performance as Gordon Gekko in WALL STREET, but I want to highlight two very high-quality comedies that he starred in. He’s incredibly appealing opposite Annette Bening in the Rob Reiner/Aaron Sorkin project THE AMERICAN PRESIDENT, and he arguably gives the best performance of his career opposite Frances McDormand and Robert Downey Jr as a grizzled University professor in the entertaining WONDER BOYS.
Synopsis: Comedy-drama about a widowed US president and a lobbyist who fall in love. It’s all aboveboard, but “politics is perception” and sparks fly anyway.
Synopsis: A college professor tries to overcome his writer’s block and finish his novel while dealing with divorce, his affair with the chancellor’s wife, a thieving student and his expectant publisher.
