Vincent Georgie: This highly original romantic drama could have gone wrong in more than a few ways, but filmmaker Maria Schrader and especially her lead actor Dan Stevens (of “Downton Abbey” fame) are in full-command of the film’s tone and energy. A good date night on this one.
Synopsis: A scientist at the Pergamon Museum in Berlin is persuaded to participate in a study to get funding for her research. For three weeks, she must live with a humanoid robot designed to be the perfect life partner for her.
Vincent Georgie: If there were an Oscar for “Most Unusual Movie Title”, this film from Bhutan would surely win. Instead, it’s nomination is for nothing less than “Best International Feature” at the Oscars. The film is achingly sincere, simple and respectful of Bhutanese culture, and specifically the lives of the young children in this community. Take a chance on this film -it will touch your heart.
Synopsis: An aspiring singer living with his grandmother in the capital of Bhutan dreams of getting a visa to relocate to Australia.
Vincent Georgie: This is a potent documentary about the lives of Zimbabweans, as they head towards their first democratic election in 30 years. The nerves, skepticism and passion of the people is palpable. What is at stake is not only power but, hopefully and more importantly, credibility.
Synopsis: In the first Zimbabwean presidential election since Robert Mugabe was ousted in a coup, 40-year-old opposition candidate Nelson Chamisa runs against ruling president Emmerson Mnangagwa.
In celebration of Oscar weekend, let’s look at two times when the Academy got it right. Best Actress Winner Julia Roberts (as real-life crusader Erin Brockovich) and Best Actor Winner Forest Whitaker (as real-life dictator Idi Amin) are both widely considered as spot-on choice.
Erin Brockovich (Julia Roberts) is a woman in a tight spot. Following a car accident in which Erin is not at fault, Erin pleads with her attorney Ed Masry (Albert Finney) to hire her at his law firm. Erin stumbles upon some medical records placed in real estate files. She convinces Ed to allow her to investigate, where she discovers a cover-up involving contaminated water in a local community which is causing devastating illnesses among its residents..
While in Uganda on a medical mission, Scottish doctor Nicholas Garrigan (James McAvoy) becomes the personal physician and close confidante of dictator Idi Amin (Forest Whitaker). Although at first Dr. Garrigan feels flattered by his new position of power, he soon comes to realize that Amin’s rule is soaked in blood, and that he is complicit in the atrocities. Garrigan faces the fight of his life as he tries to escape Amin’s grasp.
