This March, we’re thrilled to be a part of the theatrical release for Riceboy Sleeps. The film, directed by Anthony Shim, was the 2022 winner of the WIFF Prize in Canadian Film and went home with a $25,000 prize last fall. It has since gone on to win a variety of other awards, so don’t miss this second chance to see it on the big screen!

Also coming soon, we have Jesse Eisenberg’s first feature When You Finish Saving the World, featuring Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard; Canadian novelist and director Anaïs Barbeau-Lavalette’s Chien Blanc; and a documentary on a very relevant community issue, Love in the Time of Fentanyl.

Mark your calendars for March 21-23, 2023.

Buy your tickets today, and we’ll see you at the movies!

riceboy sleeps

After losing her husband, So-young relocates to Canada in the 1990s with her young son, Dong-hyun, in tow. Determined to provide a better life for him than the one she left behind, So-young does her best to overcome the constant racial and cultural challenges that confront them. The mother is set on building her new life, which now includes a relationship with a Korean Canadian man who is eager to take on the role of Dong-hyun’s father.

Dong-hyun is brutally bullied by his classmates, and he isn’t helped by the timid, distinctly Canadian racism of his teacher and principal, who consider the family “troublesome.” At work, So-young battles loneliness and racist and sexist comments. As they negotiate their separate circumstances, the rift between mother and son grows. Unwelcome news sparks an unplanned return to South Korea — and the in-laws So-young hasn’t spoken to in many years — might open up the possibility of mutual understanding.

when you finish saving the world

Evelyn has devoted herself to helping people in hard times, but she struggles to connect with her son Ziggy, an aspiring internet star oblivious to the problems of the world.

As Evelyn attempts to become a parent figure to an unassuming teenager she meets at her shelter, and Ziggy fumbles through his pursuit of a brilliant and politically conscious young woman at his high school, this emotional comedy reveals a funny and sharply perceptive portrait of a mother and son who may seem at odds but who are more alike than either would care to admit.

chien blanc

1968. The United States is on the verge of imploding. Martin Luther King is assassinated, and racial tensions plunge the country into violence.

French author, Romain Gary, who lives in Los Angeles with his wife, actress Jean Seberg, takes in a stray dog. That dog is soon a fixture in the house, charming the couple’s only son, Diego. The dog is affectionate with everyone – except Black people. The “white dog” has been trained to attack African American demonstrators.

For Seberg, a committed ally of the Black Panthers, keeping the dog is unthinkable. For Gary, putting it down is equally inconceivable.

Gary becomes fixed on the animal. He can’t abandon it. He takes it to a kennel, hoping to cure it of the hatred that was instilled in it by humans. He entrusts the dog to Keys, a Black dog trainer, who promises to reform it. Keys, gripped by his tragedy, does the job – and then some.
