iF you WANT to see what all the buzz is about

weapons

Vincent Georgie: Eerie, engaging, and memorable, check out filmmaker Zach Cregger’s masterfully rendered film. And for those who don’t enjoy horror, I would describe the film as a thriller with horror elements and not the other way around. And what a fun return for an actress who shows up late in the film and walks off with the thing.

Synopsis: When all but one child from the same classroom mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.

Available on Apple TV and YouTube.

if you WANT a black comedy

the roses

Vincent Georgie: While not as acidic as The War of the Roses, this remake benefits from strong chemistry between Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch and a lighter visual palette to counterbalance all the bad behaviour. The supporting cast is fun, namely Kate McKinnon. Stir up some Negronis and enjoy the film.

Synopsis: Life seems easy for picture-perfect couple Theo and Ivy: successful careers, a loving marriage, great kids. However, a tinderbox of fierce competition and hidden resentments soon emerges when Theo’s career nosedives and Ivy’s own ambitions take off.

if you WANT An action-packed night

bloodsport

Vincent Georgie: While many will doubt the acting prowess of Jean-Claude Van Damme (frankly, rightfully so), his arrival on the film scene and his unbelievable acrobatic prowess are entirely to his credit. This is the film that really put the “Muscles from Brussels” on the map. It’s a lot of fun.

Synopsis: U.S. soldier Frank Dux has come to Hong Kong to be accepted into the Kumite, a highly secret and extremely violent martial-arts competition. While trying to gain access to the underground world of clandestine fighters, he also has to avoid military officers who consider him to be AWOL. After enduring a difficult training and beginning a romance with journalist Janice Kent, Frank is given the opportunity to fight. But can he survive?

Available on Apple TV, YouTube, Crave, and Amazon Prime.

DOUBLE FEATURE

co-stars through the years

Vincent Georgie: Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson have no less than 4 Oscars between them, and carved out legendary, 7-decade careers on-screen. While Caine has retired from acting, and Jackson passed in 2023, let’s take a look at two wonderful examples of co-stars finding themselves together in 1975 and then again nearly 50 years later, in 2023. The latter film marked the last film of both of their careers.

the romantic englishwoman

Lewis (Michael Caine), an English novelist with writer’s block, suspects his wife, Elizabeth (Glenda Jackson), is having an affair when she goes alone on a vacation to Europe. His suspicions are confirmed when she begins a romantic entanglement with Thomas (Helmut Berger), a German drug dealer who claims to be a poet. The situation grows more complicated as Thomas reconnects with Elizabeth in England, and seeks writing advice from Lewis regarding a screenplay he is working on.

Available on Plex.

the great escaper

Bernie, a veteran, causes alarm at the care home when, with the support of his wife, he secretly sets off for Normandy to attend the 70th anniversary of D-Day.
