Vincent Georgie: Earlier this week, we announced our nominees for the WIFF Prize in Canadian Film, which includes the excellent new drama Where Souls Go. One of the stars of the film is the terrific actress Monia Chokri, who herself was a nominee a few years ago when she directed this memorably evocative and sexy film.
Synopsis: Sophia’s comfortable life turns upside down the day she meets Sylvain, and she leaves everything for a new, burning passion.
Available on Apple TV, YouTube, and Amazon Prime.
Vincent Georgie: I was recently spending time with cinephile friends and we were discussing how strong Robert Benton’s film is, how well it holds up, and how gut-wrenching the family drama is. Hoffman and Street both won Oscars here, to the surprise of absolutely no one.
Synopsis: On the same day, Manhattan advertising executive Ted Kramer (Dustin Hoffman) lands the biggest account of his career, he learns that his wife, Joanna (Meryl Streep), is leaving him and their young son, Billy (Justin Henry). Forced to raise his son alone, Ted loses his job but gains a stronger relationship with the child with the help of another single parent, Margaret (Jane Alexander). When Joanna returns to claim custody of Billy, the ensuing court battle takes a toll on everyone concerned.
Available on Apple TV, YouTube, and Amazon Prime.
Vincent Georgie: 2-time Oscar Winner (and 5-time nominee) Kazu Hiro was recently celebrated at TIFF for his astonishing craftsmanship in his design of makeup prosthetics and appliances, and hair design. While he has done work that is large in vision and scale, he is best known for some of his more subtle achievements. Take a look at the two films that brought him home the gold.
