Vincent Georgie: Ever seen a film where everyone involved just needed to…cool off? Check out this smart, sexy, over-heated affair. The four leads have palpable chemistry and are well-cast. A memorable fave from WIFF 2016.

Synopsis: While vacationing on a Sicilian island with her boyfriend (Matthias Schoenaerts), a rock star (Tilda Swinton) receives an unexpected visit from an old flame (Ralph Fiennes) and his seductive daughter (Dakota Johnson).

Vincent Georgie: WIFF superfans Mary & Andrew have often shared with me their love of cats, a sentiment that I share. For all the cat fans out there, this is a loving and insightful film about the beautiful strays and feral cats living in Istanbul. A lovely film.

Synopsis: Hundreds of thousands of cats have roamed the metropolis of Istanbul freely for thousands of years, wandering in and out of people’s lives, impacting them in ways only an animal who lives between the worlds of the wild and the tamed can. Cats and their kittens bring joy and purpose to those they choose, giving people an opportunity to reflect on life and their place in it. In Istanbul, cats are mirrors to ourselves.

IF YOU WANT SMART SUSPENSE

LAKEVIEW TERRACE

Vincent Georgie: Thanks to an appealing cast and strong pacing, this forgotten thriller is a great option for some thrills on a warm Summer night. From playwright turned filmmaker Neil LaBute. The film benefits from having quite a lot to say about the politics of race, channelled through a crime thriller.

Synopsis: Moving into their first home, married couple Chris and Lisa Mattson look forward to a blissful new life together. That is until they meet their new neighbour Abel Turner, who introduces himself to Chris by pretending to be an armed carjacker. Getting off to a bad start, things only get worse as the new homeowners come to realise that Turner is angered by their interracial relationship.

THE VERSATILE TATIANA MASLANY

Vincent Georgie: Best known for her Emmy-Winning showboat lead role in the popular series “Orphan Black”, Saskatchewan-native Tatiana Maslany is well-regarded as an actress of reliable skill and adaptability. Take a look at one of her earliest works from WIFF 2012 that signalled something special was happening, and a more recent impressive turn opposite Jake Gyllenhaal.

A rebellious teen has to repeat her senior year of high school and gets caught between adolescence and adulthood, as two male admirers vie for her attention.
