IF YOU WANT SOMETHING OFF-KILTER

I LOVE BOOSTERS

Vincent Georgie: Funny, energetic, and frequently sharply observed, this one is a true original. Filmmaker Boots Riley works infrequently, but always has something biting and inventive to say when he does work. Have fun with this one.

Synopsis: Professional shoplifters embark on a wild adventure as they target a cutthroat fashion mogul.

IF YOU WANT SOME HEARTY LAUGHS

GALAXY QUEST

Vincent Georgie: Expectations were low to say the least when the film was released and, to the delight of audiences and critics alike, the film was heralded as a perceptive, inventive, and very funny success. Fun one to watch with friends or the family.

Synopsis: The stars of a 1970s sci-fi show — now scraping a living through re-runs and sci-fi conventions are beamed aboard an alien spacecraft. Believing the cast’s heroic on-screen dramas are historical documents of real-life adventures, the band of aliens turns to the ailing celebrities for help in their quest to overcome the oppressive regime in their solar system.

IF YOU WANT A ROMANTIC DRAMA

SHE’S HAVING A BABY

Vincent Georgie: While considered one of his minor works, filmmaker John Hughes is playing in a slightly more serious key while still leaning into the truthful charms of his best work. Kevin Bacon, and Elizabeth McGovern are both terrific, in this distinctly late 80s romance.

Synopsis: Jake (Kevin Bacon) and Kristy Briggs (Elizabeth McGovern) have made the leap from high school sweethearts to newlyweds, but married life is not what Jake expected. While he fantasizes about a dream girl and envies the lifestyle of his single best friend (Alec Baldwin), Kristy is ready to have a baby. Instead of sharing this with Jake, she opts to secretly stop taking birth control. However, Kristy comes clean after failing to become pregnant, prompting Jake to go to a fertility clinic.

DOUBLE FEATURE

CANADA DAY WEEKEND

Vincent Georgie: BBQs, pool parties, maybe camping, possibly a cottage? Regardless, once you settle in on the couch it’s time to laugh thanks to lots of Canadian talent both on and off screen in these two vintage Canadian faves.

MEATBALLS

Tripper is the head counselor at a budget summer camp called Camp Northstar. In truth, he’s young at heart and only marginally more mature than the campers themselves. Tripper befriends Rudy, a loner camper who has trouble fitting in. As Tripper inspires his young charges to defeat rival Camp Mohawk in the annual Olympiad competition, Rudy plays matchmaker between Tripper and Roxanne, a female counselor at Northstar.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

It’s vacation time for outdoorsy Chicago man Chet Ripley (John Candy), along with his wife, Connie (Stephanie Faracy), and their two kids, Buck (Chris Young) and Ben (Ian Giatti). But a serene weekend of fishing at a Wisconsin lakeside cabin gets crashed by Connie’s obnoxious brother-in-law, Roman Craig (Dan Aykroyd), his wife, Kate (Annette Bening), and the couple’s two daughters. As the excursion wears on, the Ripleys find themselves at odds with the stuffy Craig family.
