MILE END KICKS

Vincent Georgie: Irreverent, intelligent and introspective, filmmaker Chandler Levack’s ode to Montreal, bands, boys, and all things 2011 is catapulted by Barbie Ferreira’s starring role. The film nails its time, place, and tone. An MVP soundtrack sure doesn’t hurt either. This was WIFF 2025’s Opening Night Film.

Synopsis: A 24-year-old music critic gets romantically involved with members of an indie band in Montreal.

IF YOU LOVE SCIENCE & NATURE

FORCE OF NATURE: THE DAVID SUZUKI MOVIE

Vincent Georgie: A fave from WIFF 2010, and in celebration of a recent visit to UWindsor with the legendary and inspiring Dr Suzuki, take a look at filmmaker Sturla Gunnarsson’s wonderful portrait of Canada’s most iconic scientist.

Synopsis: This feature documentary profiles the life and work of world-renowned Canadian scientist, educator, broadcaster and activist David Suzuki on the occasion of his last lecture in 2009—a lecture he describes as “a distillation of my life and thoughts, my legacy, what I want to say before I die.” As Suzuki reflects on his family history—including the persecution of Japanese Canadians during WWII—and his discovery of the power and beauty of the natural world, we are spurred to examine our own relationship to nature, scientific knowledge, and sustainability throughout modernity and beyond.

IF YOU WANT TO BE TRANSPORTED

WHAT DREAMS MAY COME

Vincent Georgie: Ethereal, emotional, and completely transporting, this long-forgotten drama deserves to be re-examined. The incredible production design, visual effects and world-building connected to the most personal of human stories are all laudable.

Synopsis: After Chris Nielsen (Robin Williams) dies in a car accident, he is guided through the afterlife by his spirit guide, Albert (Cuba Gooding Jr.). His new world is beautiful and can be whatever Chris imagines. Even his children are there. But, when his wife, Annie (Annabella Sciorra), commits suicide and is sent to hell, Chris ignores Albert’s warnings and journeys there to save her. Upon arrival, Chris finds that rescuing Annie will be more difficult than he’d imagined.

DOUBLE FEATURE

THE EVER-DEPENDABLE MATT DAMON

Vincent Georgie: One of the best, and most under-appreciated stars of our times, Matt Damon will lead the much anticipated The Odyssey. Take a look at two typically strong performances by Damon that got little/no attention. He simply makes it all look too easy.

COURAGE UNDER FIRE

During the 1991 Gulf War, Lieutenant Colonel Nathaniel Serling (Denzel Washington) accidentally caused a friendly fire incident, a mistake that was hushed up by his superiors. Following the war, he is assigned to investigate the case of Army Captain Karen Walden (Meg Ryan), killed in action when her Medevac unit was attempting to rescue the crew of a downed helicopter. But, as Serling interviews the members of Walden’s crew, he realizes their stories about the incident don’t add up.
