iF you want a powerful drama

Vincent Georgie: I’ve always been a fan of performers known for their comedic talents, demonstrating their dramatic chops. In this film, comedienne Judy Greer is nothing short of exceptional in a complicated, gravely serious role. Actor turned director Michael Shannon has assembled an excellent ensemble cast (many from the Chicago theatre world) to wrap around Greer. A strong film and worthy of a good watch.

Synopsis: Janice is struggling in the aftermath of a shocking crime at the hands of her son. She and her husband seek solace in rival religious congregations.

if you want A crime thriller

Vincent Georgie: Fresh off her memorable performance in the latest season of “The White Lotus”, Carrie Coon is reliably terrific in this film opposite the underrated Shea Wigham. The secret weapon of this crime thriller? It’s also frequently and darkly quite funny. The definition of a hidden gem.

Synopsis: Don is strong-armed by mobsters to execute a hit on Phyllis, but instead the two hatch a plan to steal money from the people who want her dead.

Available on Apple TV and YouTube.

Vincent Georgie: Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, Tom Hanks’ showboat starring performance opposite his dear friend Wilson the volleyball still packs an emotional punch and is a great example of a humane and touching film. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, a few years following their Oscar-adorned work on Forrest Gump together.

Synopsis: Obsessively punctual FedEx executive Chuck Noland (Tom Hanks) is en route to an assignment in Malaysia when his plane crashes over the Pacific Ocean during a storm. The sole survivor of the flight, Chuck, washes ashore on a deserted island. When his efforts to sail away and contact help fail, Chuck learns how to survive on the island, where he remains for years, accompanied by only his handmade volleyball friend, Wilson. Will Chuck ever return to civilization and reunite with his loved ones?

Available on Apple TV and Amazon Prime.

DOUBLE FEATURE

Wonderful family films

Vincent Georgie: Too often, the category of “family entertainment” can be the dumping ground for low-quality, low-entertainment fare. Family films should not be painful for parents to watch. In our double feature this week, take a look at two outstanding family films that will entertain and engage a younger audience while fully satisfying adult audiences as well. Both of these films are real winners.

hunt for the wilderpeople

A boy (Julian Dennison) and his foster father (Sam Neill) become the subjects of a manhunt after they get stranded in the New Zealand wilderness.
