Vincent Georgie: Filmmaker Matt Johnson’s pop culture sensation Nirvana The Band The Show The Movie owes much of its irreverence, boldness and genuine energy to his previous films, including this ultra-low budget creative marvel.
Synopsis: The line between reality and fiction starts two blur when two best friends start making a movie about getting revenge on bullies.
Vincent Georgie: This outstanding drama was heralded for its Oscar-winning screenplay adaptation and also marks the first – and only – time that Harrison Ford was nominated for an Oscar. He is rock-solid, ably supported by Kelly McGillis and a young Lukas Haas. Australian filmmaker Peter Weir has arguably made his best film here.
Synopsis: Detective John Book is assigned to guard Amish mother Rachel Lapp and her son Samuel, who witnessed a murder in the toilets at Philadelphia station. However, the killers are after them and the three must hide out in Lapp’s community, where Book’s aggressive, hard-bitten manner clashes with the gentler beliefs of the Amish.
Available on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and YouTube.
Vincent Georgie: A landmark crime drama that put Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Mireilles on the global cinema map. You will be floored by the film’s dramatic intrigue and breathtaking pacing. Nominated for 4 Oscars.
Synopsis: In the poverty-stricken favelas of Rio de Janeiro in the 1970s, two young men choose different paths. Rocket (Phellipe Haagensen) is a budding photographer who documents the increasing drug-related violence of his neighborhood. José “Zé” Pequeno (Douglas Silva) is an ambitious drug dealer who uses Rocket and his photos as a way to increase his fame as a turf war erupts with his rival, “Knockout Ned” (Leandro Firmino da Hora). The film was shot on location in Rio’s poorest neighborhoods.
Available on Apple TV and Amazon Prime.
Vincent Georgie: Next week at WIFF Presents, we will be featuring Rose Byrne’s latest comedy, Tow. While we have this formidable, versatile actress on our minds, allow me to recommend two wonderful performances of the multi-talented Australian.
A young couple suffering from arrested development are forced to live next to a fraternity house after the birth of their newborn baby.
Available on Apple TV, Crave, YouTube, and Amazon Prime.
After the death of her husband, a woman (Susan Sarandon) moves from New Jersey to Los Angeles to be closer to her daughter (Rose Byrne).
Available on Apple TV, Crave, Plex, Amazon Prime, and YouTube.
