Vincent Georgie: Though imperfect, Brian De Palma’s cinematic treatment of the famed Black Dahlia murder has more heat, style and texture than most can probably even handle. Starring Aaron Eckhart (perfectly cast), Hilary Swank (badly miscast), Josh Hartnett (one of his best performances) and Fiona Shaw (off-the-rails fun). The film is long-forgotten and more than worth discovering, sheerly for the scale of the swings it takes.
Synopsis: Two cops in the 1940s Los Angeles investigate the murder of a Hollywood starlet (Mia Kirshner), and one (Aaron Eckhart) puts his marriage in jeopardy by obsessing over the crime, while the other (Josh Hartnett) becomes involved with a woman (Hilary Swank) from a prominent family, who happens to have an unsavory tie to the victim.
| Available on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and YouTube. |
Vincent Georgie: Sophisticated, nuanced and quite the pot-stirrer, the film is impeccably performed by the perfect triangle of Glenda Jackson, Peter Finch and Murray Head. The bad-ass quality of the film remains over 50 years after its initial release.
Synopsis: Recently divorced career woman Alex Greville (Glenda Jackson) begins a romantic relationship with glamorous mod artist Bob Elkin (Murray Head), fully aware that he’s also intimately involved with middle-aged doctor Daniel Hirsh (Peter Finch). For both Alex and Daniel, the younger man represents a break with their repressive pasts, and though both know that Bob is seeing both of them, neither is willing to let go of the youth and vitality he brings to their otherwise stable lives.
Available on Apple TV.
Vincent Georgie: The unexpected mother-son duo of SNL vet Molly Shannon and wonderful character actor Jesse Plemons gives us some really hearty laughs, many smiles, and genuinely well-earned tears. A gem of a film that is surely to please.
Synopsis: A struggling comedy writer, fresh from breaking up with his boyfriend, moves to Sacramento to help his sick mother. Living with his conservative father and younger sisters, David feels like a stranger in his childhood home. As his mother worsens, he tries to convince everyone — including himself — he’s doing okay.
Available on Apple TV.
Vincent Georgie: Take a look at two beautifully performed European dramas that navigate the high stakes and antics of tense courtrooms.
A young man is accused of rape, but he claims the young woman is only out for revenge. The two protagonists and their loved ones see their lives, their convictions and their certainties shattered.
Available on Amazon Prime.
For the past year, Sandra, a German writer, her French husband Samuel, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel have lived a secluded life in a remote town in the French Alps. When Samuel is found dead in the snow below their chalet, the police question whether he committed suicide or was killed.
Available on Apple TV, YouTube, and Amazon Prime.
