iF you revere robert duvall

the apostle

Vincent Georgie: I was once at a party of film lovers, as we debated the best actors in the world. People threw around many names that received both nods and skepticism. A friend shouted out “Robert Duvall” and silenced the whole group. An unimpeachable choice. Take a look at his tremendous work as both an actor and a director in this underseen film.

Synopsis: After Sonny (Robert Duvall), an eccentric Pentecostal preacher, learns that his wife is having an affair, he beats her lover into a coma and flees the state of Texas. Now in a small Louisiana town, Sonny goes by the name of “Apostle E.F.” and opens a new church with the help of a retired reverend (John Beasley). While battling personal demons and injecting new life into his congregation, Sonny dates a radio station worker (Miranda Richardson) and searches for peace in his new life.

Available on Apple TV, Amazon Prime, and YouTube.

if you WANT a nifty thriller

a quiet place

Vincent Georgie: With a novel concept and an appealing cast (including surprise SAG-winner Emily Blunt), this thriller is worth making a return trip to. If you enjoy it, it’s sequel is available to you as well.

Synopsis: If they hear you, they hunt you. A family must live in silence to avoid mysterious creatures that hunt by sound. Knowing that even the slightest whisper or footstep can bring death, Evelyn and Lee are determined to find a way to protect their children while desperately searching for a way to fight back.

Available on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Apple TV.

if you want some cheeky humour

but i’m a cheerleader

Vincent Georgie: Come for the campy plot; stay for the memorable laughs. A film as if made by John Waters via a lesbian comedy writer. Very fun film.

Synopsis: Megan (Natasha Lyonne) considers herself a typical American girl. She excels in school and cheerleading, and she has a handsome football-playing boyfriend, even though she isn’t that crazy about him. So she’s stunned when her parents decide she’s gay and send her to True Directions, a boot camp meant to alter her sexual orientation. While there, Megan meets a rebellious and unashamed teen lesbian, Graham (Clea DuVall). Though Megan still feels confused, she starts to have feelings for Graham.

Available on Crave, PLEX, and Amazon Prime.

DOUBLE FEATURE

Vincent Georgie: If you are seeking beautifully written, tender, humane dramas look no further than these international favourites from WIFF 2023 and WIFF 2025, respectively. Outstanding films.
