if you love mozart

amadeus

Vincent Georgie: One of the most lavishly accoladed and lavishly produced films of all time, Milos Forman’s epic Mozart-focused drama swept the 1984 Oscars.

Synopsis: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Tom Hulce) is a remarkably talented young Viennese composer who unwittingly finds a fierce rival in the disciplined and determined Antonio Salieri (F. Murray Abraham). Resenting Mozart for both his hedonistic lifestyle and his undeniable talent, the highly religious Salieri is gradually consumed by his jealousy and becomes obsessed with Mozart’s downfall, leading to a devious scheme that has dire consequences for both men.

Available on Apple TV, Amazon Prime and YouTube.

if you love audrey hepburn

my fair lady

Vincent Georgie: A beautiful, gentle, and winning musical. Hepburn is perfection, in a film celebrating its 60th Anniversary.

Synopsis: In this beloved musical, pompous phonetics professor Henry Higgins (Rex Harrison) is so sure of his abilities that he takes it upon himself to transform a Cockney working-class girl into someone who can pass for a cultured member of high society. His subject turns out to be the lovely Eliza Doolittle (Audrey Hepburn), who agrees to speech lessons to improve her job prospects. Higgins and Eliza clash, then form an unlikely bond — one that is threatened by an aristocratic suitor (Jeremy Brett).

Available on Apple TV and Amazon Prime.

if you love tina turner

what’s love got to do with it

Vincent Georgie: In show business, when someone gives a command, full throttle performance, it is said that they “…left it all on the stage.” There are few performances in the past many decades that so thoroughly exhaust its performers both musically and emotionally than Oscar-nominees Angela Bassett and Laurence Fishburne as Tina and Ike Turner.

Synopsis: Based on the life of the legendary soul singer, Tina Turner (Angela Bassett) — born Anna Mae Bullock — discovers her love of singing in her Tennessee church choir. She moves to St. Louis to pursue a career, and there she meets the charismatic Ike Turner (Laurence Fishburne), who rechristens her Tina and offers to help her succeed. As a musical team, Ike and Tina take the charts by storm. But as his physical abuse worsens, Tina has to make the tough decision to leave Ike and set out on her own.

Available on Apple TV, Disney+, Crave and Amazon Prime.

DOUBLE FEATURE

all hail, amazing soundtracks

Vincent Georgie: These two films have soundtracks that do not just enhance their stories; these soundtracks elevate and change these films into something they could never have been. Aimee Mann’s soundtrack for the first film is really an extension of its screenplay, and the unexpected use of song and musical numbers in the film are perfect for this masterfully ambitious film. The second film, with a soundtrack by Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, sets an energetic but chilling ton over the whole film. It single-handedly elevated the “Facebook movie” into something complex and mournful.

the social network
