if you want a film that will make you cheer

sing sing

Vincent Georgie: This film is so sensitively made, so achingly sincere and so well-intended and humane, it makes you want to be a better person by the end of it. This film’s trajectory to today has been long and bumpy, but don’t miss out on it. Nominated for 3 Oscars including Best Actor for the great Colman Domingo. 

Synopsis: Imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit, Divine G finds purpose by acting in a theatre group alongside other incarcerated men, including a wary newcomer.

Vincent Georgie: A great example of counter-programming during the Christmas break, this exceptionally well-made and enticing gothic remake demands you sit up and take notice. Nominated for 4 Oscars covering the gamut of its outstanding production values (including for Toronto costume designer Linda Muir). 

Synopsis: In the 1830s, estate agent Thomas Hutter travels to Transylvania for a fateful meeting with Count Orlok, a prospective client. In his absence, Hutter’s new bride, Ellen, is left under the care of their friends, Friedrich and Anna Harding. Plagued by horrific visions and an increasing sense of dread, Ellen soon encounters an evil force that’s far beyond her control.

if you want to experience david lynch

wild at heart

Vincent Georgie: Lynch passed recently, leaving a hole in the cinematic landscape that will never be filled. Whether you are a Lynch-head or have never seen one of his films, jump into his Palme d’Or-winning nightmarish road trip to hell. Just go with it and don’t worry about logic or anything. 

Synopsis: After serving prison time for a self-defense killing, Sailor Ripley (Nicolas Cage) reunites with his girlfriend Lula Fortune (Laura Dern). Lula’s mother, Marietta (Diane Ladd), desperate to keep them apart, hires a hitman to kill Sailor. But he finds a whole new set of troubles when he and Bobby Peru (Willem Dafoe), an old buddy who’s also out to get Sailor, try to rob a store. When Sailor lands in jail yet again, the young lovers appear further than ever from the shared life they covet.

celebrating the grammys

Vincent Georgie: With the Grammys taking place on Sunday night, let’s spend the weekend watching two massive hits from the early 80s that won the Grammy for Best Soundtrack in 1983 and 1984, respectively. Very entertaining and highly watchable films to boot. 

flashdance

Alex Owens (Jennifer Beals) is a beautiful young woman who works a day job in a steel mill and dances in a bar at night. When Alex discovers that her handsome boss, Nick Hurley (Michael Nouri), is both interested in her and supportive of her performing career, she renews her efforts to get accepted into a prestigious dance conservatory. Although Alex is frightened of failure, she is cheered on by Nick, as well as by her mentor, former ballet performer Hanna Long (Lilia Skala).

purple rain

A victim of his own anger, the Kid (Prince) is a Minneapolis musician on the rise with his band, the Revolution, escaping a tumultuous home life through music. While trying to avoid making the same mistakes as his truculent father (Clarence Williams III), the Kid navigates the club scene and a rocky relationship with a captivating singer, Apollonia (Apollonia Kotero). But another musician, Morris (Morris Day), looks to steal the Kid’s spotlight — and his girl.
