if you want a masterpiece

breathless

Vincent Georgie: If you have never seen it, let’s change that and introduce you to top-quality, influential cinema. If you have seen it, be re-invigorated all over again.

Synopsis: Petty thug Michel (Jean-Paul Belmondo) considers himself a suave bad guy in the manner of Humphrey Bogart, but panics and impulsively kills a policeman while driving a stolen car. On the lam, he turns to his aspiring journalist girlfriend, Patricia (Jean Seberg), hiding out in her Paris apartment while he tries to pull together enough money to get the pair to Italy. But when Patricia learns that her boyfriend is being investigated for murder, she begins to question her loyalty.

Available on Apple TV, The Criterion Channel and YouTube.

if you want an edgy drama

we need to talk about kevin

Vincent Georgie: The central conflict of this film is a double-down on both familial drama and public tragedy. Welsh filmmaker Lynne Ramsay masterfully and very stylishly tells this intense, morally complicated and terse story. With an incredible sense of cinematic style, Ramsay directs her cast with a penchant for post-modern dread. Tilda Swinton is sublime and Ezra Miller’s casting is a marvel in and of itself.

Synopsis: Eva Khatchadourian (Tilda Swinton) is a travel writer/publisher who gives up her beloved freedom and bohemian lifestyle to have a child with her husband, Franklin (John C. Reilly). Pregnancy does not seem to agree with Eva, but what’s worse, when she does give birth to a baby boy named Kevin, she can’t seem to bond with him. When Kevin grows from a fussy, demanding toddler (Rocky Duer) into a sociopathic teen (Ezra Miller), Eva is forced to deal with the aftermath of her son’s horrific act.

Available on MUBI and Amazon Prime.

if you want to be on the edge of your seat

a hijacking

Vincent Georgie: Breathlessly nerve-wracking, exciting and intense, check out this fantastic Norwegian thriller. A fave from WIFF 2013.

Synopsis: After Somali pirates hijack a Danish cargo ship and take the crew hostage, authorities in Copenhagen begin negotiations with the pirates to free the crew.

Available on Apple TV, Plex and Amazon Prime.

DOUBLE FEATURE

all hail, nicholas hoult

Vincent Georgie: TOne of the most interesting and consistently excellent rising young actors of the past decade has been UK-born Nicholas Hoult. He stars opposite Jude Law next week in our WIFF Presents title, THE ORDER, though he has been turning in great work for ages. Let’s look back to his childhood in a film opposite Hugh Grant and then more recently, in a COVID-filmed thriller opposite Ralph Fiennes. Hould has emerged as a sought after and versatile actor.

As a result of one of his liaisons, he meets Marcus, an odd 12-year-old boy with problems at school. Gradually, Will and Marcus become friends, and as Will teaches Marcus how to be a cool kid, Marcus helps Will to finally grow up.
