This February, join us for another great selection of films that we’ll be screening at the Capitol Theatre. We’re bringing back local favourite Boblo Boats: A Detroit Ferry Tale, as well as films with awards buzz this season, All The Beauty and the Bloodshed, Close and Decision to Leave.

Directed by Academy Award-winning filmmaker Laura Poitras, All the Beauty and the Bloodshed is an epic, emotional and interconnected story about the internationally renowned artist and activist Nan Goldin told through her slideshows, intimate interviews, ground-breaking photography, and rare footage of her personal fight to hold the Sackler family accountable for the overdose crisis.
For over 85 years, steamship Ste. Claire transported generations to Boblo Island, an amusement park nestled in the waters between the US and Canada. When the vessel comes under threat of ruin, a doctor, psychic and amusement park fanatic unite to save their beloved steamship from the scrapyard. Interweaving local lore and mythology, Boblo Boats explores the whitewashed history of amusement parks and one crew’s crusade to bring back the memories.
Narrated by Motown legend Martha Reeves, the documentary explores the rich history of the island and its boats, while also placing the story in the present day. Before Boblo Island was shut down in 1993, passengers by the thousands reached the amusement park by way of two steamships: the SS Columbia and the Ste. Claire.
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Cannes, Close tells the story of Rémi and Léo who are inseparable, hanging out and playing together all the time—physical, tactile, joyful and innocent, but certainly far more intense than most 13-year-old friends. Léo is especially close to Rémi’s mum and is physically at ease with her. Schoolmates suddenly become aware of the intensity of their friendship. Girls—who are perhaps honest, or perhaps malicious—ask Léo if he and Rémi are a couple.
Soon the boys are starting to make mean remarks to Léo, who is angry, scared and humiliated. He withdraws from Rémi, blanks him in the playground and goes in for macho ice hockey. Rémi is deeply baffled and wounded; Léo can hardly bear Rémi’s mute and then not-mute reproach, as well as his own fickle dishonesty.
For Rémi, Léo’s sudden decision to break up with him is a violent, unspeakably painful rupture that Rémi does not have the language to explain to himself.
A detective falls for a mysterious widow after she becomes the prime suspect in his latest murder investigation.
Decision to Leave is an exceptional love story and a sublime noir thriller that invites the audience to get lost in a mesmerizing tangle of tension, slow-burning desire and subtle emotions. The resulting experience is a personal and highly satisfying immersion in pure cinema.
Everything starts with a fall. A man who was climbing a mountain is found dead, crashed to the ground. Tragedy? Suicide? Homicide? Handsome detective Hae-jun (Park Hae-il) investigates the mystery. He is a gentle man, happily married and devoted to his work.
Making the case even smokier is Seo-rae (Tang Wei), the elusive, charismatic and impossibly attractive Chinese wife of the deceased, whose charm creeps under Hae-jun’s skin. In ways he could have never envisioned, their broken conversations—deciphered through smartphone translations, her composed gestures and mysterious allure—upset his life little by little, making him fall mentally and emotionally.
