A successful weekend of programming highlighting the Canada – USA relationship on film.
This past weekend, WIFF hosted a special weekend of screenings to meet the moment and look at the longstanding Canada / USA relationship on film.
This special weekend was supported by Miller Canfield LLP, and WIFF Presents is supported year-round by the Downtown Windsor BIA.
We kicked off the weekend on Friday with a screening of Shepherds, the WIFF 2024 Opening Night Film and TIFF’s Best Canadian Film. The Quebecois drama was also recently nominated for two Canadian Screen Awards—Best Adapted Screenplay and Achievement in Cinematography.
The weekend’s pillar film was You Are Here: A Come From Away Story, a documentary about the planes that landed in Gander, Newfoundland, after the 9/11 attacks. We were joined by special guests Brian Mosher, journalist film, and Bill House, executive producer. Entertainment host and media personality Teri Hart moderated special on-stage interviews with them.
To help us kick off the screening was Colin Bird, General Consul of Canada in Detroit, who reminded us of the longtime friendship of our two countries, followed by Peter Hrastovec, Windsor’s Poet Laureate who was also involved in the Great Canadian Flag project. The film’s screening had a full house of new and familiar faces and helped us in feeling a sense of community and conversation.
Throughout the weekend, WIFF also hosted screenings of Canadian Bacon, Argo, and The Best of the Best: Jazz from Detroit.
On Saturday, there was a special event hosted by Anthony Leardi, MPP, to acknowledge Essex community leaders with the King Charles III Coronation Medal. Vincent Georgie, Executive Director and Chief Programmer of WIFF, was among the recipients, acknowledging the impact he has made locally and in Ontario through his leadership of WIFF.
