anora

the apprentice

A young Donald Trump, eager to make his name as a hungry second son of a wealthy family in 1970s New York, comes under the spell of Roy Cohn, the cutthroat attorney who would help create the Donald Trump we know today. Cohn sees in Trump the perfect protégé—someone with raw ambition, a hunger for success, and a willingness to do whatever it takes to win. The Apprentice is directed by award-winning Iranian-Danish filmmaker Ali Abbasi (Academy Award nominated, European Film Award winner Border, Cannes Best Actress Winner Holy Spider).

World premiering in Competition at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, The Apprentice stars Emmy Award nominee Sebastian Stan (Pam & Tommy) as Donald Trump, Emmy Award winner Jeremy Strong (Succession) as Roy Cohn and Academy Award nominee Maria Bakalova (Borat Subsequent Moviefilm) as Trump’s first wife, Ivana. The fact-based script is written by Gabriel Sherman, author of the New York Times best-selling biography of Fox News founder Roger Ailes, The Loudest Voice in the Room.

the best of the best: jazz from detroit

The Best of the Best: Jazz from Detroit is a landmark — the first documentary film to explore the dynamic story of the city’s innovative and influential jazz musicians. Inspired by Mark Stryker’s award-winning 2019 book Jazz from Detroit, the feature-length film makes the case that you can’t tell the history of jazz without telling the history of jazz from Detroit. Set within Detroit’s dramatic rise and fall as an industrial power and the struggles and triumphs of its African American community, the documentary weaves a compelling historical and cultural tapestry through the 20th and 21st centuries. From legends like Elvin Jones, Yusef Lateef, and Ron Carter to today’s stars like Karriem Riggins, Garrett, and Regina Carter, scores of world-class jazz musicians have rolled off Detroit’s assembly line—nurtured by a profound legacy of mentors such as Barry Harris, Marcus Belgrave, and Rodney Whitaker and the resiliency of an American city that never quits. The Best of the Best: Jazz from Detroit reminds audiences that Detroit remains a mecca of Black musical excellence, and that jazz is central to the soundtrack of the city’s renaissance.

Among the musicians, producers, historians, and writers appearing in the film are: Barry Harris, Charles McPherson, Robert Hurst III, Christian McBride, Pat Metheny, Terence Blanchard, Sheila Jordan, Regina Carter, Louis Hayes, Johnny O’Neal, James Carter, Karriem Riggins, Rodney Whitaker, Don Was, George Bohanon, David Maraniss, Herb Boyd, Jamon Jordan, Marsha Music, Endea Owens, Marion Hayden, and many others.

born hungry

He went looking for his family … and found himself.

An inspiring true story brought to life, Born Hungry is a gritty yet life-affirming human drama about a young Indian boy who finds himself abandoned by his family, lost on trains and thousands of miles from home. Now, Sash, a celebrity chef who once survived alone on the streets of Chennai eating from garbage bins before ultimately being adopted by a Canadian couple, returns to India armed with only blurry memories to find his lost family. Born Hungry is a raw, true and important story with a huge heart that deals with identity and cultural heritage.

Conclave

WIFF 2024 Closing Night Film – From director Edward Berger (All Quiet on the Western Front), Conclave follows one of the world’s most secretive and ancient events – selecting a new Pope. Cardinal Lawrence (Ralph Fiennes) is tasked with running this covert process after the unexpected death of the beloved Pope. Once the Catholic Church’s most powerful leaders have gathered from around the world and are locked together in the Vatican halls, Lawrence finds himself at the center of a conspiracy and discovers a secret that could shake the very foundation of The Church.

the seed of the sacred fig

Misagh Zare is Iman, a newly promoted “investigator” for the Iranian government in the early days of the Women, Life, Freedom rebellion. Iman’s handgun goes missing, and it could only have been taken by one of his family members. His wife Najmeh (Soheila Golestani) proclaims innocence, as do his daughters Rezvan (Mahsa Rostami) and Sana (Setareh Maleki). As the strife in the streets ratchets up, so do Iman’s anger and paranoia. With every passing moment, the women in his life grow more afraid—and yet none of them will confess…
The latest from Mohammad Rasoulof (There Is No Evil; A Man of Integrity) is a gripping metaphorical drama that triumphs on multiple levels: as a mystery, it’s tense and absorbing; as a portrait of family division, it’s moving; and as an act of political protest, it’s urgent and powerful. A subversive to his core, Rasoulof has paid a price for his art: sentenced to eight years in prison plus flogging, he now lives as an exile in Europe.

shepherds

WIFF 2024 Opening Night Film – Mathyas trades in his Montreal life as a young advertising executive to become a shepherd in the South of France. But the harsh realities of the pastoral world force him to question his romantic vision of the profession. A visit from Elise, a civil servant who has abruptly quit her job, gives Mathyas’ quest a new direction. Together, with a herd in their care, they embark on a journey towards a new way of life in the mountains.

the substance

Have you ever dreamt of a better version of yourself?
You. Only better in every way.
You’ve got to try this product: The Substance.
It changed my life.

Demi Moore gives a career-best performance as Elisabeth Sparkle, a former A-lister past her prime and suddenly fired from her fitness TV show by repellent studio head Harvey (Dennis Quaid). She is then drawn to the opportunity presented by a mysterious new drug: THE SUBSTANCE. All it takes is one injection and she is reborn – temporarily – as the gorgeous, twentysomething Sue (Margaret Qualley). The only rule? Time needs to be split: exactly one week in one body, then one week in the other. No exceptions. A perfect balance. What could go wrong?

Deliriously entertaining and ruthlessly satirical, Coralie Fargeat’s Cannes sensation turns toxic beauty culture inside out with a be-careful-what-you-wish-for fable for the ages. Explosive, provocative and twisted, The Substance marks the arrival of a thrillingly visionary filmmaker.
